Mara Kaplan is the President of Playful Solutions.
She was one of the founding parents and served as Chief Executive Officer of the Center for Creative Play® for 12 years.
Mara has two children, one of whom is severely developmentally delayed. She and five other parents, who are raising children with disabilities, recognized the importance of play as a learning experience for their children. Determined to create a place where children of all abilities were welcome to play together they established the Center for Creative Play (CFCP), in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1995.
Mara was responsible for taking the organization from a start-up to one with national impact. Mara developed an assessment process to help playspaces ensure that they are completely accessible and have the highest play value possible. The CFCP Playspace, which has been replicated in other cities, sees 45,000 visitors a year.
Today, Mara works with non-profit organizations with their strategic planning and work in social ventures. She also works with community groups, schools, corporations, and non-profits to improve opportunities for children.
Mara has an elementary education degree and a minor in gifted education from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. She received her MBA, with a concentration in nonprofit management, from Boston University. Since she has been in Pittsburgh, Mara has worked for a variety of nonprofit organizations including United Way, Youth Volunteer Corps., The Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania, and Camp Fire Boys and Girls.
